The arrival of Captain Cook in the Hawaiian Islands became a major turning point for the people of Hawaiʻi. Western contact brought much innovation for Hawaiʻi, leading to King Kamehameha unifying the Island chain, however, the arrival of westerners in the islands caused loss of traditional knowledge and practices, great loss of life, land, and sovereignty. Hawaiians still face these issues today.
